The picturesque town of Sokyryany is located in Chernivtsi region, not far from the border with Moldova and the banks of the Dniester River. This place combines a rich history, picturesque natural landscapes and interesting cultural attractions.
The name of the city is associated with a legend about fugitives who, escaping Turkish enslavement, settled in the Dniester forests. They cleared the thickets and built houses with axes, and the sound of the tools gave rise to the name "Axe People".
After the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Sokyrianska community of Chernivtsi region became a refuge for internally displaced persons (IDPs) who were looking for a safe place to live.
The Sokyrian community actively received IDPs, providing them with necessary assistance. In particular, vulnerable categories of displaced people, such as large families, people with disabilities, and pensioners, received food packages and bedding.
Chernivtsi region has received a total of over 108 thousand internally displaced persons, of whom over 36 thousand are children.
The project “You Should Know About Tuberculosis” started here in 2022. A small team of two colleagues — Alla Babiy, head of the social work department of the KNP CNSP of the Sokyrian City Council, and Anastasia Zaremska, director of the Sokyrian Central Primary Health Center — from the beginning of the project, they traveled to the settlements of the community, conducted surveys, and talked about the project. Later, they organized a group in one of the messengers, and people began to come themselves. A very motivating factor was the introduction of motivational certificates for undergoing a medical examination and starting treatment.
And in 2024, the Center for Resilience was launched on the basis of the KNP "Center for Providing Social Services" of the Sokyryan City Council. The center became a center for free psychological and social assistance for citizens. In particular, for vulnerable segments of the population.
Anna came here with her baby and her elderly parents. They evacuated from the Kherson region shortly after the baby was born. But since the birth took place in not very suitable conditions, Anna first needed medical care due to a birth injury. Social workers from the project "You Should Know About Tuberculosis" first of all helped her with placing the child in a foster family. This gave Anna the opportunity to devote time to her health and the health of her parents.
Anna's own screening showed nothing. But when the entire family was examined, tuberculosis was discovered in her father. Today, he has successfully completed treatment.
Thanks to the social workers of the "You Should Know About Tuberculosis" project, the entire family improved their health and are now settling into their lives in the community.
