Life after stress

The project "Live Without Limits II" in Dobropillya is implemented by the NGO "Social Initiatives for Occupational Safety and Health" (LHSI) in partnership with the Donetsk Regional Center for Social Services. Ms. K., born in 1957, has lived in the city of Dobropillya all her life. Her home has always been a cozy haven, where she raised two children and welcomed grandchildren. However, recent events have disturbed her peace, leaving a deep mark on her soul.

One evening, a woman was in the kitchen when suddenly there was a sharp crash that shook the entire house. It was the arrival of a drone that hit the house next door. The blast wave broke the windows in her house. Mrs. K. fell to the floor and covered her head with her hands, stunned and frightened. Fortunately, she was not physically injured, but the anxiety and shock of her heart remained with her.

After that night, the woman's life changed dramatically. She began to avoid loud sounds, becoming nervous at the slightest noise. She often had nightmares in which explosions haunted her, forcing her to relive that terrible moment over and over again. Eventually, her family convinced her to see a psychologist.

Ms. K. turned to the Dobropil City Center for Social Services with a request to restore her psychological state, where during the first conversation with the psychologist, the woman told her story, which became a trigger for her. The Center's specialists actively cooperate with the project "Living Without Limits II". The psychologist noticed that during the conversation the woman began to show symptoms of stress. The specialist immediately stabilized her condition according to the ISP (Intervention for Stabilization Protocol), which allowed the woman to return to balance. The psychologist together with Ms. K. developed a psychosocial plan, an assessment of problems and assistance in meeting basic needs was carried out. The woman was also referred to the Dobropil City Center for Primary Health Care for consultation regarding her health.

Ms. K. began regular sessions with a psychologist, where she was able to talk openly about her fear and pain for the first time. The psychologist explained to her that she was experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and that this was a normal reaction to severe stress. Together they worked on calming techniques such as breathing exercises, muscle relaxation, art therapy, working on maintaining psychological health, psychological resilience, and mastering practical skills for self-help in case of anxiety and stress reactions. The psychologist also helped meet the family's identified needs: receiving humanitarian aid in the form of food and hygiene kits, receiving financial assistance for insulation and repair of the damaged house.

Thanks to the support of a specialist and her children, the woman slowly recovered and gradually returned to her usual life. She began to spend more time outdoors, took up her favorite hobby again, and even joined a local support group, where women had the opportunity to support each other and attend master classes. But due to the constant sounds of the air raid siren and explosions in the city, which became more frequent, her anxiety began to increase. And for the safety of herself and her family, having received information about the possibility of free evacuation with resettlement from the city of Dobropillya, Ms. K.'s family left for a safer region of Ukraine.

The project "Live Without Limits II" is implemented in partnership with the Donetsk Regional Center for Social Services, the Kharkiv City Center for Social Services "Dovira" and the State Rehabilitation Institution "Center for Comprehensive Rehabilitation for Persons with Disabilities "Podillia".

The project is implemented by the NGO "Social Initiatives for Occupational Safety and Health" with the support of UNDP within the framework of the project "Transformational Recovery for Human Safety in Ukraine" and with financial support from the Government of Japan.
