What you should know about tuberculosis

The purpose of the project

The project aims to active detection of new TB/XDR-TB cases among vulnerable population groups (former prisoners, internally displaced persons - IDPs) in Donetsk, Vinnytsia, Lviv, Kharkiv, Chernivtsi regions and Kyiv city.

The project is being implemented NGO "Labor and Health Social Initiatives" with the support of Public Health Alliance Foundation within the framework of the grant Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, as well as in cooperation with regional and local social service centers and medical and preventive institutions of various levels.


Project implementation period

January 2018 – December 2026


Project target groups

  • Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs): people who have been forced to leave their homes or places of residence due to armed conflict and who have not crossed an internationally recognized state border. Priority is given to clients with additional vulnerabilities or social vulnerability beyond the poverty line.

  • Former prisoners: persons who have been released from prison within the last two years.

During the large-scale attack, the NGO LHSI and regional coordinators did not stop the project work "You should know about tuberculosis" in Donetsk region (except Mariupol). Since March 2022, work has been resumed in Kharkiv region, project implementation has begun in Lviv region and Kyiv city, and later in Chernivtsi and Vinnytsia regions. In 2026, the team formed new tasks and continued the project implementation.

Project objectives

  1. Implementation of an effective redirection system and interaction algorithm to ensure unhindered access to TB diagnosis and treatment among target groups.

    • Activities in 2026 are carried out according to approved clinical routes and interaction algorithms agreed with healthcare institutions.

    • Regional social work coordinators will monitor the step-by-step implementation of the algorithms.

  2. Customer screening questionnaire regarding risk factors and symptoms that may indicate tuberculosis, and motivation to undergo diagnosis.

    • Clients with a positive screening result undergo motivational counseling and are referred to a medical facility according to the algorithm.

  3. Ensuring equal access to TB/XDR-TB diagnostics and support for treatment if the disease is detected.

    • If necessary, social workers provide escort services for clients to medical facilities.

    • To ensure access to vital services, payment for TB/X-TB diagnostics is provided for undocumented clients or those in need of urgent diagnostics.

  4. Creating a favorable environment for project implementation:

    • Project management and administration in the regions;

    • Highlighting best practices in each of the six regions;

    • Collection, analysis and development of information materials;

    • Maintaining accounting and reporting documentation and monitoring activities.

In addition, the project team provides technical assistance to establish infection control when providing social services in communities and ensures access to high-cost TB diagnostic services.
