March 24 — World Tuberculosis Day: what you should know and why it is still relevant

March 24 is World Tuberculosis Day, a date designed to draw attention to one of the world's most dangerous infectious diseases. It was on this day in 1882 that German physician Robert Koch announced the discovery of the bacterium that causes tuberculosis.

Why is this important today?

Although tuberculosis is treatable, it remains a serious health threat. Every year, millions of people worldwide become ill with tuberculosis, and thousands of cases are registered in Ukraine.

Special attention is required for:

  • people with weakened immunity
  • internally displaced persons
  • people living in difficult socio-economic conditions

That is why the project "You Should Know About Tuberculosis" is being implemented Non-governmental organization "Labor and Health Social Initiatives" from 2018 to the present. During the large-scale attack, the NGO LHSI and regional coordinators did not stop the project work "You should know about tuberculosis" in Donetsk region (except Mariupol). Since March 2022, work has been resumed in Kharkiv region, project implementation has begun in Lviv region and Kyiv city, and later in Chernivtsi and Vinnytsia regions. In 2026, the team formed new tasks and continued the project implementation.

How is tuberculosis transmitted?

The disease is transmitted through airborne droplets — when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or even talks. The lungs are most often affected, but other forms are possible.

Main symptoms

  • a cough that lasts more than 2–3 weeks
  • fever
  • night sweats
  • weight loss and weakness

If such symptoms are present, patients should immediately contact a medical facility.

Treatment and prevention

Modern medicine allows for a complete cure for tuberculosis, provided that it is diagnosed promptly and treated. Ukraine has free testing and treatment programs.

Experts emphasize:

  • Regular check-ups save lives
  • Self-medication is dangerous.
  • interruption of treatment may lead to persistent forms of the disease

The importance of awareness

World Tuberculosis Day is not just a date on the calendar, but a reminder of the need to take care of one's own health and responsibility to others.

Dissemination of information, early diagnosis, and support for people undergoing treatment are key steps towards overcoming tuberculosis as a global problem.
